Though the thumbnail is important, I think those three things are more important.

Niche Selection

There is a marketing term called TAM or Total Addressable Market.

The problem is that most people create content for a very small group of people. Before you jump into any niche, you need to do research to see if any other channels have already “paved the road” for you.

Chances are if you cannot find a similar channel making content and thriving, then you are either forging a whole new market, OR there are no views to be had there.

I do this by doing an analysis for the biggest channels in the space and deciding if I can make better content then they are doing.

Ideation Checks

The idea for your video is more important than the thumbnail and title.

A GREAT idea for a video can trump everything else and make up for a poor thumbnail, but not necessarily for a poor title.

I usually go to the home page of the channels and see what their most popular videos are. But you can’t just take it; you still have to verify the idea by checking the “outlier score.”

An outlier is a how much did a video stray from it’s normal amount of views on the channel.

I use 1of10 for this now, and it saves SO much time. There are some really helpful training videos on how to use 1of10 effectively.

Title Optimization

This one is a gamechanger…

Get your title and then rewrite it a little differently….

then do it again… and again… and again…

I sometimes go up to 20 or 30 times just constantly coming up with title ideas.

It’s totally an experience and “by feel” type of situation, but the more you do it, the better you will get at determining good titles for your videos.
